Providing Hope for Stem Cell Transplant Recipients Globally
13 November 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic has raised hurdles for international travel. Medical couriers now face additional quarantine requirements upon disembarkation. This has made it increasingly difficult for the medical transportation of stem cells, where time is of the essence, especially for the patients who need it for their transplant and families eagerly waiting for their loved ones to be treated.
To ensure medical couriers can continue to perform their duties with minimal disruption, arrangements were made behind the scenes by Certis and its stakeholders to support the life-saving mission under the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP).
With adequate safety measures in place, couriers escorted by Certis Aviation Security Officers can now disembark without the need for quarantine. Upon successfully handing over within specially demarcated areas, couriers may leave the country immediately on the next flight or be accompanied by our officers to the airport’s hotel for temporary accommodation while waiting for the next available flight. This entire process is supervised by Certis officers to ensure no interaction between couriers and the members of the public.
“As a global air hub, we must be ready to improvise and ensure that crucial medical services and supplies are not disrupted even during COVID-19. We will continue to support the BMDP and support our airport community in worthy causes,” said Mr Andy Tan, Vice President, Head of Certis Aviation Security.
While this might seem like a simple logistical shuffle, without the efforts of all involved, Certis would not have been able to continue to fulfil this duty unhindered. We are proud that our teams found a solution for us to make a difference to society in the work that we do.
Mr Charles Loh, Chief Executive Officer of the BMDP, said “Every packet of stem cells means a second chance at life for a patient and hope for an entire family. The support from your Aviation Security Officers has enabled this for a good number of patients and their families. On their behalf, we thank you. We are sure we can count on the continued support of Certis.”
